• Did I mention that I’m nesting?  In fact, with less than fifty days to go, I’m now on the final stretch of the home makeover marathon.  No major remodeling–just cleaning, painting, reorganizing, and redecorating.  So far, we’ve completed the schoolroom, the master bedroom, and Caleb’s room.  We are now giving our family room a facelift, and as a finishing touch, I gave myself one night to complete a painting to complement the soothing colors of putty and espresso dominant in this all-purpose room.  Lately, time, space, financial, and energy restrictions make it nearly impossible to engage any artistic endeavor that is not confined to a completion time-frame of one night–or two at tops! So, after five hours, here it is! I had an old 3×4 ft. canvas frame we’d made some years back and a roll of canvas in the garage.  Troy stretched the canvas for me on Saturday night, […]

  • I love the smell of Fall morning air meandering throughout the house…and waking up to a clean kitchen.  I love that my sweet husband always has a hug for me first thing.  I love the sound of Caleb counting his beats while practicing piano…and that his brothers like to sit and listen to him play.  I love the sense of possibility for the day when beds are made.  I love that the boys ask to have family worship around the school table…and that Liam is starting to add and subtract…and that he celebrates his academic progress with whoops and hollers…that Judah likes to repeat phonograms though his vocabulary’s limited…that Caleb knows the difference between finishing and finishing with excellence.    I love that I’m becoming more patient.  I love fixing lunch for the kids because it always tastes soooo good to them.  I love that when the boys play, they always […]

  • Caleb, the oldest, has his own room now in anticipation of new baby brother’s arrival.  His six yr. old design sense requested a navy blue jet-themed room decor.  I hunted for affordable non-cheesy jet fabric with no success.  Yet, while on a quick trip to Joanne’s the other day for a few notions, I spotted a Jeep fabric for $4 a yard.  Very reasonable, especially considering it was a faux quilt panel–meaning, it already looked like a quilt in design.  No, problem, I thought, I’ll just double the yardage widthwise and make a quilt big enough for a full-size bed.  But as over-ambitious crafting would have it, my plans were not as simple to execute as were conceived.  The pattern of the panel did not easily repeat itself widthwise.  So, after admitting defeat, and consulting with my in-laws about piecing options, I decided to cut out each individual Jeep square, […]

  • As often is the case, the best Korean food in the city can be found in the back of a tiny unassuming Korean market where the use of English is almost never heard. We took the boys there for lunch, and to our amusement, they loved it, and devoured the Gim-Bahp and Bulgogi. Mr. Simons and I split a Dolsot Bibimbap, and it was delish. Our meal was served with traditional sides of cabbage and cucumber kimchi, which, by the way, Judah eats enthusiastically just before chasing it down with big gulps of boricha. In case you’re wondering, the kids do eat almost any ethnic food–at least that’s our goal. They do occasionally struggle with meatloaf, however. And Judah finished everyone’s leftovers… …and kept going… and going, until there wasn’t a scrap of rice left.

  • Time for the big reveal! I know many of you have been eagerly anticipating pictures of my completed bedroom makeover project…and I have been so eager to share them! Many elements of the room are not yet completed, but I couldn’t wait until everything was perfect. The preacher hasn’t gotten his study/desk area of the room quite cleaned up yet, either, so…you’ll have to wait on that as well, as you can’t put demands on intellectual and spiritual genius! *grin*  I decoupaged an old box with various black and white papers for his nightstand–so as to gracefully hide all the things a man really needs to have a purse for!  The preacher also has a vintage-inspired African travel poster above his desk, a reminder of his great love for flying and Africa.  I love that it complements the room so well..in a masculine way. The new quilt is amazing. My […]

  • My brother and sister-in-law moved to Colorado last weekend. It takes a few days for the reality to set in that all the things that have seemed so commonplace for many years–like eating meals together, learning the same things at church, growing cousins up together–are no longer a part of my weekly routine. Perhaps Judah’s taking it the hardest, as he looks for his sidekick Calla, whom he lovingly refers to as “Ya-Ya,” around every corner. They were born three days apart, and have recently been caught deep in conversation with one another in toddler-ese. With the myriad of ways to keep in touch nowadays, they will no doubt see and hear much of each other. Nevertheless, I’m old-fashioned, and find nothing comparable to a good visit over tea and cookies. It is not that distance is cumbersome or inconvenient in today’s world–it’s merely that quality of relationship is more […]

  • Today, September 8, is a special day.  It is the wedding anniversary for both my parents, Thomas and JC, and my husband’s parents, Jim and Linda.  My parents are celebrating 34 years today and my in-laws are celebrating 43 years.  Now that Troy and I have loved and learned through 10 years of marriage, we can only respect and admire with thanksgiving the amazing commitment that our parents’ anniversaries represent.  We also see the great mercy and lovingkindness of Christ evidenced in these commited unions.  In the marriages of both our parents we have witnessed the choice to serve and sacrifice over the years.  Troy and I are both so very thankful for parents who have walked the road we are on, and have come out the other side still holding hands and best of friends. We wish you the most joyous anniversary, Mom and Dad; Ma Ma and Ba […]

  • Here’s a little painting I whipped up for our new black and white bedroom. As I mentioned in the last post, we are making a big jump from kelly green/butter/reds, to gray/black/white/yellow. The bedroom redo is inspired by a quilt my mother and father-in-law are generously making for me in these colors. The quilt should be done in a few weeks! I’m excited to see the room come together, as it is not only a color, but a spatial makeover. After shuffling the furniture about in the room, we’ve been able to carve out a his and her’s office space. I made my space a little more like a studio for crafting and sewing. It’s starting to feel like the respite our room will need to be once the baby arrives. Can’t wait to show you the details…
