•   I think I may have forgotten to mention that I am currently spending 8 days and 7 nights, with 4 kids and 1 husband in 1 hotel room, visiting a total of 12 members of my extended family, in the San Francisco Bay. We are on day 4, and all is well, and downright relaxing! I accidentally left my firewire to my camera at home, so you’ll have to wait to see pictures of the 6 of us traveling by plane, train, and buses; eating dim sum; walking from Fisherman’s Wharf to Chinatown; swimming with Number 4 for the first time; reuniting Number 3 with his best pal, Cousin Calla; hiking Muir Woods; the kids’ meeting their Chinese Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather; and climbing into a De Havilland Beaver…when we get back! Some moments I have captured only in my mind’s eye: like the bewildered looks we get […]

  • 3:30 in the afternoon is Teatime at our house. It’s our new tradition. My recent reentry into the world of tea has reminded me how much I love the ceremony, and why it’s appropriate for young gentlemen as it is for young ladies. And young gentlemen are what I have. Number 1 and Number 2 are now old enough to forgo afternoon naps, and enjoy reading and engaging in quiet activities in the afternoons while the little ones are asleep. Our diminutive respite is held daily at the kitchen table around 3:30. The boys sip, respectfully, out of thrifted teacups that came complete with a voice altering function that turn manly boys into demure young lads. We steep our teapot, stir discreetly with our demitasse spoons, and indulge in sweet little sugar cubes. Occasionally, we munch on lemon wafer cookies. The best part of this ritual is the deliberate conversation […]

  • Get ready, friends. I’ve been in the kitchen. A lot.  Even for me.  I’m afraid you’ll be getting quite a few recipes in the days ahead… So, today, I want to draw your attention to the uber-moist, from-scratch, chocolate sheet cake. You know the one I’m talking about: it appears at every church potluck, most funeral receptions, and definitely any gathering where grannies bake up their most-requested. Growing up in a Chinese, non dessert-baking home, I really never knew the secrets of the chocolate sheet cake, but I was keenly aware of what it tasted like. With each bite, I’d marvel, “What is this?” The quest would slip my mind until I encountered the ubiquitous confection once again at the next big church function.   This Easter was the very first holiday celebrated at our church’s new space. The Good Friday service was to be followed by a dessert fellowship. […]

  • This is truly one of my new favorite things.  How brilliant–grilled crusty bread in salad–just perfect for all those who like a little lettuce with their croutons. Hmmm…or is this how croutons came to be?…but crouton is a French word, non?…I digress. So, you can’t mess up Panzanella, unless you burn the bread, I suppose. I added mozzarella to mine, and Ina likes capers in hers, but no matter how you toss it up, these are the main ingredients: Crusty bread brushed with olive oil, sliced 1/2 inch thick, grilled, then cut into cubes Coarsely chopped ripe tomatoes Coarsely chopped cucumbers Coarsely torn basil Drizzle of olive oil Drizzle of red wine vinegar Coarse salt and pepper Simply delicious, and efficient too, taking care of bread and salad in one big bowl! Perfect for the grilling season that’s around the corner.

  • Everyone enjoys the decadence and distinction of an afternoon tea in our culture of speed and efficiency. Perhaps that explains the popularity of the tea class I teach a few times a year at our local cake decorating/candy making/baking specialty store. The 17 students that enrolled in the class Saturday sampled a full-tea menu prepared by moi, while sipping on three different selections of teas. Here was the menu: *You may recall the recipes for the meringues and scones, previously posted. There’s so much I’d love to share about the joys of taking tea, but desire as I may to continue to elegantly sip and savor in quietude, the reality of my Monday is found in homeschooling, laundry, cleaning, cooking, and snuggling with four rambunctious boys! Contentment with the “must-dos” makes the “get-tos” just that much sweeter doesn’t it? Have a wonderfully distinctive day whatever you have on your plate…

  • Last week, Spring was here. I planted pansies and geraniums. I held a birthday party outside. This week, it’s Winter once more. While fresh basil and tomatoes dotted the menu last week, soups and comfort food seem to be in order now. Taking advantage of chilly weather oven cooking, I served up sweet potatoes tonight with some homemade chicken pot pie. (Am I really Chinese?!)  Sweet potatoes are not “preferred” by my children, but somehow, that makes me all the more provoked to convince them otherwise. I know, I know–as if I don’t have enough battles apart from tuber-training. If sweet potatoes require some coaxing at your dinner table, give this a try: Make-Your-Own Baked Sweet Potato Bar Baked sweet potatoes butter 1 bowl of brown sugar 1 bowl of granola (I used Trader Joe’s Praline granola) 1 bowl of miniature marshmallows 1 bowl of chopped toasted or candied pecans […]
