The earth is the LORD'S, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. -Psalm 24:1
ContactA little man can only wait at the bottom for so long… …before he’s ready to discover high places… …and though it be perilous and challenging at times… …he’s got none better to pave the way… …and cheer him on from the top! “He makes my feet like hinds’ feet, And sets me on my high places.” 2 Samuel 22:34
One reason why I’m often reluctant to follow recipes is that I love surprises. I’m fascinated by the experimentation of unexpected ingredients and unorthodox combinations. Until now. I discovered an unconventional chili recipe on allrecipes.com. Ground beef, check. Tomatoes, check. Beans, check. Brewed coffee…dark beer…wasabi…WHAT? I’m listening. After a few dozen raving reviews on allrecipes, I decided to go for it. I’m so glad I did. This was a chili to remember…especially when served up with sour cream, shredded cheese, diced avocados, and chopped red onion as toppings. Add a few friends, a running fountain, and a cool Fall evening under the arbor, and you’ve got yourself one extraordinarily unordinary meal at home. Wasabi Chili adapted from allrecipes.com 4 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided 2 onions, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 pounds ground beef 3/4 pound sausage 3 (14.5 ounce) cans peeled and diced tomatoes with juice 1 (12 fluid […]
Shall I remind you of this and this?
I had the opportunity to volunteer in my kids’ elective class last week at school. (One example of the best of homeschooling and private education combined!) Kid’s Kitchen is a fun class where the children learn how to properly use kitchen tools with adult supervision, follow recipes, and cook cuisine from around the globe. This is fantastic, as we also include a curriculum for kindergartners that expose them to the cultures around the world. The kids eat it up…literally! Last week’s focus was China, so yours truly volunteered to help with little hands and spring rolls. In an hour, a meal of pan-fried spring rolls, sweet and sour sauce, and cucumber salad was served up to our group of little chefs. Note to parents: Kids love to eat their own cooking…whatever it is!
After many years of hard water… …it is fun to finally be able to capture tranquility. I’m sure it’s old news for all you camera savvy folks out there, but I have yet to overcome the fear of the f-stop and shutter speed! Hubby said that all I need now, is for the second picture to light up and “flow” to Asian elevator music. Don’t worry about it if that’s not funny to you, you’re not missing anything.
After such a display of culinary indiscretion, I was thoroughly surprised and blessed when my husband prepared lunch for me during his lunch break. The last time he did this proved to be delicious, so I decided not to hold the earthworm incident against him. Indeed, it was a fantastic lunch, from my love…a man of many special talents. *grin* Toasted multigrain rustic bread with mediterranean hummus, sliced tomato, red onion, avocado, drizzled olive oil, sea salt and cracked pepper. Toasted multigrain rustic bread with cream cheese, red onion, capers, avocado, sea salt and cracked pepper.
I’m not sure what I’m posting today is very grace-laced. I can, however, offer it as insight into my eccentric life. Or my eccentric husband. How do I describe him really. He’s a lover of the Scriptures, flute music, tai chi, mountain biking, dolmas, Latin, Christian rap, flying, sushi, musicals, guns, jazz, archery, green tea, Shakespeare, Jeeping…and Man Vs. Wild. I think Bear Grylls taps into my husband’s perennial desire to overcome. His motto: “I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.” (1 Cor. 9:27) I’m not sure the Apostle Paul had eating maggots and snakes in mind when he said these words. Whether genuine or a ruse, “Man Vs. Wild” does shed some light onto what it would take to survive any circumstance. And, as my husband imagines himself to require those skills someday […]
…and they didn’t even like it. Horses, instead, were their favorite part of the State Fair. Here’s how the new obsession plays out around the house:
