Cotton hand-crocheted washcloths or dishcloths feel extravagant to me. Sometimes the simplest of things are the most luxurious. I think they fascinate me because I grew up with cello sponges for dishes and terrycloth washcloths for faces. There is nothing wrong there, I just find crocheted washcloths beautiful, functional, and oh so affordable to create. You can wash them in blazing hot water…and they last forever. I dream of having a stack of them, folded prettily–just waiting to mop up a messy face or scrub the breakfast table. The best part is that having a stack of these babies cost you very little more than time. That’s time in the car, time watching a movie…time when you can use your mind on other things while your fingers supply your collection of dishcloths.
I made up the most basic of designs; simple but chic (my favorite combo!)
…cream with variegated edging in muted earth tones. Here are the directions. (I’m no pattern maker, so bear with me):
Simplest Washcloth
5.00 mm crochet needle
Gauge: Not critical but mine measured 4 stitches=inch
Cream 100% cotton yarn
Variegated 100% cotton yarn
Chain 30.
Row 1: Chain one. Single crochet in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to the end. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, and turn.
Repeat Row 2 until desired size is reached, a total of 30 rows for a square. Fasten off and weave in end.
For edging, since crochet around entire square washcloth using variegated yarn Fasten off and weave in end.
That’s it!

YAY!! Love it. I just made a couple baby washcloths this weekend…I love cotton washcloths!
Those really look fun. I may have to learn how to crotchet. Do you offer lessons at 2 am? I know you’re up!
Very nice. The variegated yarn really adds to the washcloth!!
I too when out of the house take my crochet/knit with me. Be it traveling in the van, drs. visits, the movies,or at home watching tv with hubby, just where ever and when ever possible!!
I’m going to do this! Love it.
These are beautiful and practical. Lovely! And, I’ll bet they feel pretty nice on the face, too.
Hi Ruth! This was a fun surprise! I have been wanting to make these and wondered where to look for a pattern – thank you! I have a few I love – given as gifts… and a few I bought at a shop here in town – they are great! Thanks for the help! Can’t wait to try my hand at crocheting… Have a great day! Loved catching up on your blog and the chicken recipe – will have to try that this week, too! :O) Love, Bari
Just found your site. I was looking for washcloths. I certainly will try this out. I was looking for things to make for people who go on mission trips to take to Mexico. This should be great. Thanks
Thanks, Hilda! I agree that these would be perfect washcloths for use and distribution on mission trips. There are so many uses for this sort of a washcloth, and they hold up so nicely.
I love this idea, but I don’t know how to crotchet, but it looks worth it to learn how.
I love it!
Thank you.
