• 4 Years In Matthew

This past Sunday, my dear Preacher shared a message that concluded four years of preaching through the book of Matthew. Four. Years. I’ve marveled at the commitment, the struggle, the pressing on, the surrender, and the personal transformation that has accompanied the preparation week after week of walking in the footsteps of our Savior’s life on Earth. I’m so very thankful for my husband, who is also my pastor.

  • One Track Mind

Forgot to post today…did you miss me? It’s hard to keep track of time when you are chugging along amidst your family vacation. I was spurring on my children’s interests today, and was consequently derailed from my regular blog-posting! If you checked the blog today anyway…thank you! I’ve got you well-trained.

  • The Praise You Can’t Give In Heaven

I recently heard a speaker ask this question at a conference for Christian educators: “What is the praise you can’t give in heaven?” Intriguing, huh? He had my attention. The praise that we can’t give in heaven is the praise that we choose to give in the midst of trials and suffering. Right now, while on Earth, is the only time you will ever have the opportunity to give praise to God through pain and difficulty, through trials and testing, through loss and grief. We get to give Him praise in spite of the circumstances. You may be, like many of us who were receiving this encouragement last week, endeavoring to do something beyond your measure of ability, courage, upbringing, or circumstance. Perhaps you are getting out of debt, or raising your kids in spite of your own upbringing. Perhaps you are the only follower of Christ in a hostile […]

  • Finally Mini-Fig-ing

The boys and I have finally gotten around to making our own set of salt dough mini-figs. Squishing salt dough between your fingers is quite an affordable alternative to therapy. Seriously…it is fun for all, moms included. The best part? It requires almost zero artistic ability…unless you are attempting to dress an entire army of salt dough mini-figs in camo. But who would attempt that?!? Whether you’d like to try these salt dough creations or you simply want icy casualties floating in your lemonade, you can purchase your mini-fig ice molds here. If you didn’t catch Ashley Ann’s fantastic tutorial the first time around, be sure to check it out here. Happy squishing!

  • 13

13 years ago, we stood before friends and family, and made a commitment before God that was greater than we could have realized then. We moved several states away in discovery of “us.” 12 years ago, we left seminary, hoping to learn how to model the Gospel first in our newborn marriage…and moved again. We bought our first house and sought to make it a home. 11 years ago, we miscarried and floundered in a sweet, small town, trying to discover who “we” were. 10 years ago, we were called to ministry…and moved again. We bought our second house, and began truly building the foundation of our marriage. 9 years ago, our Number 1 made us parents. You took a trip to Zimbabwe and my parents moved to Canada. We were becoming “us.” 8 years ago, we took the college kids to Chile. Your heart grew large for God’s Word. […]

  • Backyard By Candlelight

There’s hardly a lovelier sight than a softly lit summer evening. Start with collected mason jars… …add sand or pebbles… …tealights or citronella pillar candles… …and sprinkle generously with the sweet sound of unity in praise. The makings of a perfect summer’s night.

  • On Friendship

It’s not everyday The Preacher and I sit down to a meal with another couple who, like us, have founded a school that they now head. Like us, they are Classical, Christian, and University Model. Our new friends sought to know us better over a fire-roasted artichoke at The Cheesecake Factory. The Preacher and I found ourselves recounting the past year or so of our lives. As we shared, a theme emerged: one of sickness, relational wounds, the loss of close friends and family as they moved away, and deep concern and counsel within ministry. Our birdseye view revealed what a difficult year we’ve had– each month highlighted with joys–yes–but distinctly marked by the testing of our faith and a burdened heart. Of the many lessons learned about gratitude, contentment, forgiveness, and faith this last year, the greatest  has been the over-arching picture of delighting in Christ alone: Not to […]

  • Butter Chicken

I’m no expert at Indian cuisine. I am, however, a true expert at enjoying it’s colorful flavors. Even the kids request the Indian buffet on special occasions. You either love it or really love it. I don’t know many people who object to Butter Chicken. Be adventurous and go out for some Indian sometime. If you find that you really love it, give my version a try. It’s a bit of a cross between Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, and available ingredients I have at home. When you need a fix for the intoxicating aromas of Indian fare, this simple recipe more than does the trick. 1 cup yogurt 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons black pepper 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger 4 teaspoons salt, or to taste 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-size pieces 4 tablespoon […]
