It’s humorous; when guests visit my home these days, we make our way to the bathroom first…even before a cup of tea is served! I will not lie, I L-O-V-E my new bathroom. It really reflects my style: a little vintage, a bit o’modern, a dose of rustic, a tad unexpected, just enough feminine, and a whole bunch of casual elegance. (Who am I kidding! I would better describe myself as indecisive!)

Anyway…here it is! The pictures don’t do it justice since there’s no natural light in that bath. I’m so proud of it, though, and so thankful for my sweet Preacher who worked some really late nights to get our DIY project put together!

My favorite part of the bath remodel is definitely the vanity. The Preacher and I painstakingly searched out this antique treadle sewing machine base, and created a knotty pine top for the vessel sink. I think the distressed finish ultimately worked out for this space, don’t you?

After the travertine and pebble floor was sealed, all the rich colors of the natural stone came out. I love how the pebbles look like a bath mat, but hide all the traffic!

After much inspiration on Pinterest, I decided to stencil the wall. You will recall that this was not truly a stencil, as much as a template I traced, then painted with a brush. Don’t look too closely–the lines are definitely not perfectly even! The color was chosen because it was in the reject/clearance section I came upon at Walmart. We always get Behr paint from Home Depot, but this little pint just called out to me, and I went with it. The color is Native Turquoise from Better Homes and Gardens.

And…how about $10 for a light fixture! This little chandelier was a pink and white chandy I purchased on clearance at Target two children ago, when I was convinced I’d have a baby girl…sooner or later. It was still sitting in my closet, two children later, and spray painted buttery yellow–fit perfectly in this little space. A pop of whimsy and bold color.

The framed print on the ledge is also a holdover from my little-girl-room-saving stash.

Vessel sink: Lowe’s
Faucet: Home Depot
Framed mirror: World Market (coupons come in the mail!)
Potted Rose: my own (from 10 years ago!)
Bath fixtures: Costco
Pine for top: Lowe’s
Sewing machine base: local antique shop
Tile: ASI tile
Chandelier: Target (from years ago), repainted
Soap dispenser: Target
Wall Paint: Silver Drop by Behr
Stencil Paint: Native Turquoise by Better Homes and Gardens

All this bathroom needs is a window that let’s in breeze and some bright natural light. Thankful for how it turned out anyway!

Thank you for visiting my home…even if it was my bathroom! :)

LOVE the yellow light fixture…okay, I love the whole thing. Enjoyed hearing about your husband helping you fulfill your vision for the room. Thanks for your honesty about digging into your girl room stash. (I have a boy room stash in my attic).

Laura, thank you for picking up on both those aspects of this remodel. Both of those could be posts in themselves, as there are many thoughts and feelings that go with each…

The remodel is truly fabulous! Looks like you chose everything just for me…

But it was the chandelier repainted that pricked my heart. All but one piece of my girl stash is gone 9three boys later) and now we’re starting to think of adopting. Ha! I always keep my guest bedroom pretty feminine just in case:)

ok, so this is a random commentary with no time to really think this through–but just the other day I was looking at some cake designs online, and the ones that I found that I loved were very simple, elegant, nothing fancy, yet very sophisticated in a natural way…. modern yet traditional. I couldn’t explain why I loved those cakes so much, but they nailed the ‘feel’ I was looking for (for Johay’s 2nd bday party). And I was QUITE surprised that in this random google images search in which I was finding these gems, ALL THREE of my favorites all came from the same source: “Country Living” magazine/website. COUNTRY!? I thought…then I thought, well, I do love the white painted furniture, pink rosy thing, which is kind of a coutryside feel…. but this was not homey..it was a very crisp, clean modern feel, yet very understated… ugh… like your post here, the description eludes me. I guess my point is that it is pretty exhilarating to discover the style in your head and see it in reality…that it can be done…that it exists….that there are more ‘styles’ out there than we realized or remembered…. and that if we keep reaching, keep looking, we can make our homes look like our hearts so-to-speak. The style you are describing (and I’m seeing) kind-of is along those lines. Obviuosly yours has a touch of YOUR OWN ARTISTIC STYLE (don’t be shy…you are an artist, so you get to say that.) And this is why you get to blog about these things and we happily and rightfully take the role of spectator! But it is the journey of the artist and the spectator, though, to FIND what feels like you, not TO fulfill us but because we are filled and because we are unique and because he gives us the desire of our hearts. The artists help us find it. I used to despise shopping and ‘the art of adornment’ with clothing until I had my first experience of walking into store and feeling like I was meeting myself! lol. I was like, I FOUND IT! THIS PLACE FEELS LIKE ME! And I got it. I knew then that “shopping” was about finding the things that felt like who I already was, not making myself into something that I wasn’t. I think that’s the essence of home decor, too. Ok, so you can seeeeeee that I have gone a bit overboard! haha. In my busy-ness, I haven’t commented on your blog in SO long, so the back-log apparently all just fell out at once. Thanks for sharing!

Oh my, GORGEOUS!!!! Seriously Ruth, you could make some serious cash being a decorator! If you were only closer, I would hire you!

I love the sophisticated look you always come up with on a lean budget…simply inspiring! If I were you, I would sneak into that bathroom every chance I got….hope you have some good books in there:)

Beautiful… just as I knew it would be. Really, you and the preacher did an amazing job. And, I love how you incorporated some of your girly things… not the way you originally envisioned using them but delightful and lovely all the same. I admire how freely and boldly you incorporate femininity into your home despite the male population.

I think my favorite part is the walls!

I’ve seen this bathroom reno in person and the photos do not do it justice! The most amazing feature was the pebble floor while the most creative being the antique sewing table legs repurposed. The stenciled wall was pure genius and such an affordable way to update a bathroom…..loved it! I’ve been inspired! Thanks Ruth!!
