• GraceLaced Mondays

    Welcome to GraceLaced Mondays! Grace is found in the everyday when you are intentional about taking note of it. It is found in the sink full of dishes awaiting you after a family meal, it shines in the faces of your imperfect children, it soothes from the pages of God’s Word, and it is tucked into the enjoyment of a fresh batch of cookies. Grace is in a beautiful moment and a heartbreaking one alike. Grace is blessing beyond what you and I deserve. ********************************* Seda, of By The Waters, helped us to recognize God’s grace in the story of Jonah: “He was mad at God. Jonah was mad at God for being God—for being kind and patient, merciful and compassionate. The very reasons why he was still alive! God is hero of the story. And we must tell the story, the whole story, and nothing but the story.” Amen! […]

  • Celebrating One Year

    A year ago today, I fell in love again…for the fifth time. Mancub #5 has been the joy and wonder of the last 365 days, a year that has been more challenging than any other. But where we have been weak, the Lord has been strong. Where we have shed tears, the Lord has brought laughter. Where we have felt hopeless…the Lord has given a glimpse of his sovereignty, faithfulness, and amazing love through Christ. And in His sweet care, He’s shown us all this in the gift of our littlest son as well. Happy 1st Birthday, Boo.

  • Do They Deserve It?

    My dad was an unbeliever when I was a girl. I have a very distinct memory of an exchange he and I had once that truly affected my thinking then…and now. I was a loquacious young lady and he was a typically taciturn Chinese father. I sought his affection by asking lots of questions. He gave simple answers, if any. This particular time, I found myself asking a question that had gone unanswered. Unacknowledged, in fact. He simply ignored whatever it was that I had been talking to him about. Discouraged, I blurted out, “Why don’t you answer me when I talk to you?”  He had an answer. It was deafeningly poignant as he retorted simply: “I didn’t answer you because you haven’t finished the dishes.” I remember finishing the dishes after that, and thinking on what it was that made me worthy of a response. My father was not in […]

  • Toddler Tea Time

    I remember reading about how author Sally Clarkson took time to have tea time with her children for the purpose of spending intentional discipleship time with each of them. As busy as life can be, there is something precious about tea time, about the conversations and time shared over simple but special treats. Though often seen as a girly event, I’ve enjoyed having afternoon tea with my boys for years. If you’ve been reading here for any length of time, you also know that I teach an art of tea class on occasion, and appreciate the subtleties of a perfect scone. Some of this enthusiasm for tea has trickled down to Number 4, who recently requested (unceasingly) to have a tea party with his 3 yr. old pals. I admit I tried to appease him with a pretend party or a tea party just between us…to no avail. Thus, an […]

Without Christ, I was once like the carpet – ripped, torn, […]

  • DIY Driftwood 3 Light Pendant with Anthropologie Caged Lights

    I simply can’t buy anything full price…or even half off. But, when caged pendant lights go 75% off at Anthropologie…I’m in! I really do feel thankful when I find a deal. It’s always a little reminder that the Lord is in the small things too. You know I’m always tinkering with the house, and making little changes that make a big difference in the mood and feel of my home. This was one such project. The Preacher drilled three holes into a piece of driftwood I had for decor, and disassembled each pendant and reassembled them after threading the wire through the holes. Brilliant, I know. I’m the ideas, but he’s the know-how for sure! Once reassembled and adjusted to the right length, each cord is knotted on the other side of the driftwood to hold in place. The driftwood is attached to the ceiling via hooks and jute string. […]

  • Feminine Appeal {The Rewards of Kindness}

    Before I became a wife and mother I would have considered this chapter from Feminine Appeal, by Carolyn Mahaney, the least relevant in my life. Kindness and goodness seemed to bubble up effortlessly as I (foolishly) sought the reward of being needed, appreciated, and liked by all my friends and colleagues. Yet, almost 14 years of marriage, 5 kids, and 10 years of ministry later…I dare say I need this chapter more than ever! Author Jerry Bridges explains that while kindness and goodness can often be used interchangeably, it is helpful to distinguish between these two traits. “Kindness” he says, “is a sincere desire for the happiness of others,” and “goodness is the activity calculated to advance that happiness.” (p. 119) Most of us would characterize our love for our families as truly desiring their happiness; and yet, that is not always what is felt or heard in our tone, our […]

  • The Paradox of Godly Beauty

    In this world we live in, you get noticed when you are: dressed the best flaunting rebelling getting in the last word being an individual obeying your feelings trusting in no one but yourself speaking your mind “Your adornment must not be merely external–braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.” (1 Peter 3:3-4) In His Kingdom, you are precious in the SIGHT of God when you are: dressed in humility boasting only in the cross submitting taming your tongue conforming to Christ obeying Christ trusting in the Lordship of Christ speaking only that which is edifying A familiar verse…read this morning, with a renewed sense of appreciation for the faithfulness of the Word. Having a gentle, quiet spirit is […]

  • Grecian Spaghetti Squash

    If a veggie could impart a main-dish quality and pasta-like satisfaction, spaghetti squash would be that vegetable. And what’s even better, this dish takes 15 minutes to cook, and a few minutes to throw together. Since this winter squash keeps for months uncut, keep one around for last minute meal ideas or a quick side dish. Serve it up warm or cooled–it’s delish either way! Grecian Spaghetti Squash 1 large spaghetti squash 1 large clove garlic, pressed or minced Extra virgin olive oil salt and pepper 1/2 cup sundried tomatoes 1/2 cup kalamata olives 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese Pierce the squash 5 or 6 times with a fork. Microwave on high for 15 minutes, or until skin of squash is tender. Carefully cut open squash, remove seeds, and with a fork, remove all stringy squash flesh into a bowl. Add a quick drizzle of EVOO. Add the freshly minced […]
