In a few weeks, I will be attending my first blogging conference. It is such a blessing to have an opportunity to finally meet some of my dear online friends and colleagues in person. Three of these special ladies will be my roommates: Kara from The Chuppies, Rachel from RachelWojo.com, and Kelly from The Nourishing Home. I’m joining in with other attendees to share 10 things our roomies should know about us. So…here they are, 10 things you may or may not know about me…

1. I’m not so good at small talk, especially about sports and entertainment. I don’t watch The Office, Downton Abbey, or Breaking Bad, so attempting to talk to me about these, or any show on primetime is a waste of time. I never know what team is playing who, or what sport is even in season, so please, I beg you…don’t try and break the ice with such conversations. :)

2. I am a total foodie. I love to cook, love to eat, and love to describe most experiences in life in culinary terms or expressions. For example, I’ve been known to say, “Your baby is so delicious I could eat him up with a dollop of whipped cream!”

3. English is my second language, even though it is my dominant language. Don’t be surprised if I get English idiomatic expressions all wrong: “It’s not my bag of tea.” or “You’re twisting my leg.”

4. I consider shopping and finding deals my hidden talent. I especially enjoy styling and shopping for others, so don’t hesitate to ask me to hunt for that one thing you’ve been looking for.

5. I’m an extrovert masquerading as an introvert. Something about motherhood and the demands of this season of life has sobered me up and quieted me down, I tend to be guarded and shy in big groups these day. However, in smaller groups, I have a serious history of impersonating people, laughing too loud, and showing off my interpretive dancing skills late at night. You’ve been warned.

6. I may snore. Especially during pregnancy when my sinuses are working extra hard. The husband is having a tough time confirming this one way or another, as he’s been so beat lately, he’s sleeping through anything. :) I’m sorry if I do. But, I promise I don’t sleepwalk, sleeptalk, cuddle, or sprawl across the middle of the bed!

7. I’m not too good about exercise. In fact, working out is only tolerable when chatting with a friend or watching an HGTV or cooking show. So, I’ll be counting on Kara to take me on a walk while we get caught up. :) I want to love exercise, especially since I’m married to a super disciplined workout guru…unfortunately, he’s just not into gabbing while he works out!

8. I’m really not a fan of board games. Cards or SRABBLE, yes, but LIFE, CLUE, MONOPOLY…not so much.  I have trouble with remembering the rules, the strategy, or the point of most board games, so that probably has something to do with it.

9.  I can eat chips and salsa any time of day. That, and kettle corn. I’m also never NOT in the mood for sushi.

10. I am pretty girly, but living with six guys has really made me an expert on all things Bear Grylls, guns, LEGOS, jeeping, military, and dirty socks.

Well, that’s 10 slightly obscure things about myself! I’m sure those of you who know me in real life are not surprised in the least. What about you? What is something you’d want me to know about you if we were going to be roomies for a few days? I’d love to know!

Great list! Would an ice breaker about guns & LEGOS be weird? Probably not when you live with guys.. Looking forward to meeting you!

I totally could have written this about you! It’s good to know that you’re the same Ruth I used to hang out with almost daily. ;) And I can definitely confirm #4 as one of your many talents, one that I’ve benefited from many times.

I’m so happy you get to attend Allume…can’t wait to hear about it!!

Baobei, I have recently, almost entirely quit writing comments for blogs (due to my limited time available and due to my poor English barrier). But this post of yours is just too cute for me not to respond to, both your picture and your 10 lists. Ai Ni, my daughter.

Go for it! I am so very proud of you and so very happy for you, and, so very excited for you!

Ps. I totally, totally “Amen” with Abby’s comment on this blog, I agree with each and every single word that she expressed.

LOVED this… and would love to be roomies with you some day, some where.

    As for me…
I’m not a huggy, touchy person.
I’m too serious for my own good.
    I’m a dance diva wannabe.
Sorry, watching a movie usually isn’t my thing… too long!
I’m a morning person, and don’t handle late nights well.
I shower at night and must go to bed with clean feet.

Yes, we MUST be roomies someday, somehow. I am so not surprised by these…okay, maybe the dance diva thing, but I am exactly the same way with everything but the last two (I’m a night persona and like to shower in the morning…) :)

Yay! I’m so excited to know more about you and am over the moon to finally meet you!

We have a bit in common. My kids love Bear Gryllis. I don’t watch much tv although I did get into Downton Abby. Of course I love food. You’ll soon see that I don’t like exercising either :)

While I won’t be your roomie, here are a few things about me:

I love deep conversation (especially on matters of theology and what not), but there only a few people that you can do this with. We used to have a wine & theology night with another couple, but they recently moved far away :(

I love my ladies nights out, but they are too few and far between.

My favorite books are biographies, theology books, and historical narratives.

I have tried for years to keep a journal. While I love writing, I’ve just not been able to commit myself to journaling.

I am not a morning person, but I’d love to talk with you to the wee hours of the morning.

I am almost pridefully frugal, but just almost ;)

I love a good antique store. Not a high priced one, but one where you can dig for treasure.

I think that should do it. Thanks!

I know this doesn’t come as a surprise, Michelle, but we really do have so much in common! I almost included my love for theological conversations as one of my 10! and, I am so game for flea market/antique shops! I’m so looking forward to meeting you in person!

    THIS MADE ME SO EXCITED!
I’m counting down the days Ruth and I’m so so happy we decided to room together !!!

So let’s work our way through these my friend :)

#1– Okay so I did faithfully watch The Office, but I promise not to say “Remember that time when Jim put Dwight’s stapler in…” and then expect you to respond.

#2–I hope between you and Kelly I can learn a lot…what was that stuff you two were raving about? You ferment your own or something?

#3– Totally makes me happy :) I hope you do this. One of my closest friends is French-Canadian and I LOVE when she pulls these kinda phrases with her own-little-twist. :)

    #4 & #5– Bargain-finding-interpretive-dancer = :)

#6– As noted in my 10…I can sleep anywhere through anything…so don’t even worry a bit about possible-pregnancy-snoring.

#7–walk–YES…even if it’s just around the perimeter of the hotel. I HAVE to be outside for a little bit at least or I’ll go crazy.

#8– Does anyone really “like” Candy-land? Really? I’m more of a Settlers of Catan, Dutch Blitz, or Catch Phrase kinda person. My husband loves RISK (so we play it a lot) but then….he also genuinely enjoys Monopoly too :)

    #9– Salty over sweet… :)

#10– Tell me more about Bear Grylls…I need a birthday gift for a nerf-gun-Lego-stop-motion-bug-loving-tree-fort-building-almost-9-year-old….

So excited and thankful for our friendship Ruth :)
    Love,
    K

What fun little tidbits! :) I found your blog at thebettermom.com and I really like it! I also don’t watch TV much either. I just wrote about that a few days ago on my blog too. If I was your roomie, I’d probably be wondering if you want more kids, and how many! :) Blessings! Lauren, lholmes79.wordpress.com
