We took a walk down by the river a few weeks ago…

…there’s nothing like the sound of crushed leaves beneath your feet paired with the cool autumn air.

Everyone is off discovering something beyond the monotony of his everyday life…

…gazing further than what can usually be seen from within the walls of your house…

…and we discover these guys…

…who seem to be sitting still and going nowhere…

…but in reality, have already shed their infant shells…

…and taken flight in their matured wings.

Did you know that the cicada takes up to 17 years, nestled beneath the shelter of the soil, before it emerges ready to try out it’s adult wings?

Be patient, Mama. This is but a short while…preparing them to shed that insufficient shell and take flight. What they will become is being molded day by day, hidden away in the safety of yours and my seemingly mundane world. Ready will be upon us soon enough. Enjoy today.

Praise the Lord that his grace abounds when all we have to offer is impatience and discontentment! May He continue to work in and through us!

I had no idea about them taking that long!
Beautiful post and a powerful image. I’m so thankful for a time-redeeming God ; even with my best intentions, I can’t go without taking at least a minute for granted. I’m so thankful for the precious lives entrusted to me.

What a great post! I love that you talk about how we shelter our children. I have a 2 year old daughter, and I face everyday knowing that someday she will be off on our own. I can panic about it, or I can trust that God will lead me as I guide her and teach her how to live in the “real” world. Thanks for the encouragement!

There are so many opportunities for panic in motherhood…and complacency. May God teach us to REST and trust in Him, with fervency and diligence.

This was a beautiful post, Ruth! Our job as mothers takes so much time and patience and intention, but like you said, in a blink they will be off on their own. I recently read that if you try to rush the process and help a chick hatch or butterly emerge from the cocoon, it actually cripples them. They need the long, hard process to build strength. I think God gave us the perfect amount of time to raise our children into stong adults. Rushing through it or neglecting it does them so much harm. I am blessed to be a mom, and I pray for the right perspective everyday!

I have seen three of these cicada shells at my backyard few weeks ago!!! There was one, and recently two more. I didn’t know what they were until I read your post. Amazing! It has also been such a timely reminder for me as i prepare for homeschooling next year and have many uncertainties. Want to treasure the time i have with my girls while they are still young, before they spread their wings. Thank you for your insight! Love your photos, they are beautiful!
