The earth is the LORD'S, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. -Psalm 24:1

  • Worship Before Service

Do you ever find yourself so busy serving the Lord that you’ve neglected intimate worship in his very presence? I’m not referring to merely listening to Christian radio or reading a devotional guide…I’m speaking of utter submission and glory to the “worthship” of Christ. He is worthy; we just don’t always attribute worthiness to Him over ourselves and our own efforts. Here are some thoughts to meditate on from the first few chapters of a simple, but poignant little book I’ve been reading, How To Worship Jesus Christ: “You never drift into being a Mary. You can always drift into being a Martha. All you have to do is just let yourself go. No woman ever drifted into being a Mary.” “Worship is not simple, but it is glorious! I have found these many years that it is the one thing the enemy will oppose more than anything else–more than intercession, […]

  • It only occurred to me today that I had forgotten to post for Father’s Day. What I had in mind to say, I’ll take the opportunity to say now, late as it may be. Father’s Day–not the holiday, but the celebration of fatherhood–is significant because God has allowed us to experience, in the most fundamental of ways, what it means that He calls himself Father, and us, his children. Protection, provision, guidance, strength, sacrifice…a few of things we can attribute to our Heavenly Father. And while our earthly attempts at parenthood can be feeble at best, His grace and adoption of us as sons, makes it possible for us to reflect what fatherhood and motherhood was meant to be. I can’t help but give thanks for the Grace in my life shown through the love of a dedicated father, a discerning father-in-law, and a husband who’s desire to be a […]

  • Today’s post is a call for change in my life and yours. I’ve been up since 5:45am. Even as I write this, I empathize with all of you who may have slept fitfully last night through many disruptions by young ones in your home. You may have endless tasks before you today, of which I can empathize as well. You may feel overwhelmed, and the day has not yet even begun–I’ve been there, and praise God, I want to share a little bit of encouragement with you. What we treasure and prioritize is evidenced through how we spend our time. While we seek to have time in the Word each day, sometimes we can lack the sweet fellowship of communing with Him as a steady means of provision, rather than a dutiful reaction to the hectic pace of our lives. I’m perennially burdened for the desire to seek first the […]

  • My love preached a compelling message yesterday from Matthew 21:1-11. It was the triumphal entry of Christ–the Messiah, the Son of David…and by week’s end, he would be beaten and killed, mockingly hailed the “King of the Jews.” Though we celebrate this event as Palm Sunday, he shared some views on why the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem could have very likely been on a Monday. This one thought has stuck with me since he shared it: The passover lamb, the spotless, unblemished sacrifice was brought into each Jewish home on the Monday of Passover week. Little did they know, the Lamb of God, the perfect, righteous One was entering the “home” of Jerusalem that very Monday, preparing to shed blood that would cover over the sins of all who would believe. Perhaps you, too, desire that your children know the magnitude of Resurrection Sunday…that it may be significant to them […]

  • It’s difficult to wrap our minds around the devastation in Haiti. I rarely watch TV, don’t get the paper, and mostly use the internet for communication…and have only wrestled with what has happened in Haiti in the last day or two (and that, only after reemerging after a family bout with a stomach bug.) My heart is grieved, as is yours, I’m sure. How do we process what has happened in Haiti in the light of our understanding of a good God? Al Mohler helps us wade through it all: The earthquake in Haiti, like every other earthly disaster, reminds us that creation groans under the weight of sin and the judgment of God. This is true for every cell in our bodies, even as it is for the crust of the earth at every point on the globe. The entire cosmos awaits the revelation of the glory of the […]

  • They descended upon our bedroom to announce the arrival {at last!} of Christmas morning. But in their flurry of excitement, our boys didn’t ask to open presents this Christmas morn; they asked to give them. Between construction paper, glitter, popsicle sticks, and scribbles, we were showered with loving handmade gifts from each of the boys. But, nothing could’ve quite prepared us for the gifts crafted for us by Number 1, who at 7, really understood the joy of gift giving this year. Without prompting, suggestion, or assistance, Number 1 got up early and stayed up late for several days to write and illustrate short stories for his dad and me. Some gifts leave you feeling unworthy of such honor…this was surely that kind of gift. “A Strange Case For Dr. Mike” “The Golden Ship” …sisters–three to be exact–were written into this story about our family… “Aye, aye, Captain Mom!” This […]

  • While we rarely have a white Christmas in these parts, white paper and crocheted snowflakes are some of my favorite decorations for the season. Perhaps they will remind you, as they do me, the significance of Christmas for those who have been forgiven… “Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” (Isaiah 1:18) Every Christmas is a white Christmas for the believer. Find a simple tutorial for these doily snowflakes here.
