The earth is the LORD'S, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. -Psalm 24:1
ContactAnna Maria Horner, whose fabric and blog I love, is gracing my living room these days. I broke into my coveted stash of hard-to-find fabrics from her Drawing Room line. I’ve saved each of these 1/2 yards of fabric fo something special, and recently, with some furniture replacing/repurposing and redecorating in my living room, I’ve found just the right places to use them: …to reupholster an old chair… …under glass on my coffee table… …appliqued onto a World Market pillow… A little of your favorite fabric can go a long way. What are the little things you are doing around the house to create something special? Stenciling used to conjure up images of parochial folk-art and less-than chic patterns of leaves and grape-vines. Not any more. Stenciling is making a comeback in the latest decor trends and proves to be simple enough for both decorators and amateurs alike. I’m pretty comfortable with a paintbrush, but I’ve never stenciled a pattern onto a wall. That’s all about to change because our little powder bath downstairs is desperately needing an artistic makeover. Unlike wallpaper, paint is easy to change your mind on, and a fraction of the cost. Are you itching to add a little character to your casita? Here are some ideas to get you started. Pick one for me to do while you’re at it! (Source here.) (Source here.) (Source here.) (Source here.) You know I have a thing for succulents. Waxy, green, sculptural plants that require very little work–what’s not to love? I move my indoor plants around quite regularly; it changes the entire look of a room with very little effort. My most recent table display includes various succulents and airplants, mixed in with clear glass, candles, and a femininely sculpturesque phalaeonopsis for balance. It feels fresh, bold, and a little bit sophisticated. It may have been Martha Stewart that said that any humble object or flower, when clustered in quantity, becomes luxurious and uncommon. Carnations, baby’s breath, and even grass, can be strong arrangements when used in mass quantities. (I posted a few weeks ago about making extraordinary arrangements out of ordinary cut bouquets if you want some simple ideas.) Source Source So, don’t underestimate the power of clustering! Gathering several like-objects or textures, and grouping them in a charming, or […]
I’m so excited to finally be DONE with the nursery. You may recall that the idea to put together an owl-themed baby room came together only a few weeks ago, when I came to the realization that the process of creating a nursery might very well help me embrace the upcoming arrival with a little less exhaustion, and a little more enthusiasm. I’m not sure if I was successful at the exhaustion part, but we are definitely excited to bring the little guy home to his new room. I knew my budget was under $100, if that, so I got to work recycling and making art for the new room. I started by making a simple applique quilt, which I decided to use for a wall hanging. The quilt determined that the colors for the room would be teal, orange, brown, and off-white. An old friend from college saw that […]
Don’t forget to clean out your pantry this week as part of my Simply Nesting challenge. I hope you will join me tomorrow in posting about your organizing and simplifying efforts! ************************************************* All the boys have had rooms that reflect their dad’s greatest interests. Number 1 had an airplane themed room complete with a runway. Number 2 had a woodsy, hunting and fishing room. 3 and 4 both slept beneath a mopane tree I painted in their African themed room. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we’ve decided to give Cinco’s room a makeover, for his sake and ours. The Preacher loves owls, which makes for a great nursery theme. Just think what I’d be coming up with if The Preacher was an avid BBQ-er, a brilliant computer programmer, or a beer brewing enthusiast. Yes, I think owls make a fine theme. We said goodbye to Zimbabwe, where The […]
Up until about a week ago, we had not planned to repaint the nursery for Baby Cinco. It felt like a lot of effort for the fifth time. But then it occurred to me that it’s…THE FIFTH TIME. A possible last time. Not just another baby boy. He’s a unique baby. A brand new experience for the 5th time. So, we’re gearing up for a final nesting push. An owl nest, to be specific. For inspiration, I’ve put together a selection of favorite picks of owl art found on etsy. I promise to share more as I formulate a transformation plan. It’ll have to be in the next few weeks…because that’s all I’ve got left! 1. New Glasses For School 2. Owls on Blue Collage 3. Vintage Owl Wall Hanging 4. Retro Owls 5. Fantasy Tree 6. Retro Owl on Bicycle 7. Custom Owl Print 8. Old School Owl 9. […]
************ Have a lovely, and colorful weekend! Don’t forget to enter the air plant giveaway from Tuesday’s post. You have until 10pm (MST) tonight! Winner will be announced Monday!
I admitted to having a bit of a newfound obsession with air plants a few weeks ago, after being gifted a beautiful hanging glass bubble from a friend. How could I resist a plant so lovely and simple, yet requiring no dirt or daily watering?! All the loveliness of that terrarium I made with much less effort. I decided to order a mystery air plant grab bag of 5 air plants to begin my collection, confident I would find the perfect spot for the other 4 plants I would have left over after adorning my hanging bubble. And a perfect spot I found indeed! I decided to make an artsy floating display with a dried cholla cactus I picked up on a hike in the foothills here. I know it’s not for everyone, but it was just the right (free!) display for my little plants! Are you as intrigued as I am? […]
