  • Spring Is In the hAIR

The Preacher is attending a pastor’s conference this week near the residence of a dear college friend of almost 20 years. He’ll be attending with her husband. As this is the closest I will come to vicariously visiting her anytime soon, I’ve sent along some gifts for her little girls. Crocheted flower hairclips made of aqua colored cotton yarn with raspberry colored buttons for centers. Deliciously Spring, don’t you think? Here’s how to make one yourself: Step 1: Crochet a flower, any flower! Try this pattern for a single layer flower: Chain 4, sl st to make ring. *Chain 3 and sc in ring*, repeat from* four times more. Sl st to close round. (You’ll have 5 petals) Work in each chain loop of previous round: sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc. Cut yarn and weave in end. Or this one for a double layer flower: Chain 3, sl st […]

  • Would today be a good day to remind you that brisk mornings and cooler nights are just right around the corner? The smell of freshly sharpened pencils will soon become wafts of cider simmering stovetop. Pumpkins, hay bales, golden carpet of leaves…they all await you. A pretty scarf, fingerless gloves, your favorite boots…they’ll be here before you know it. And as this deliciously colored set was a little something I made for someone special, I need to get inspired, and make myself some in anticipation of the days ahead, when we may welcome lightly chilled noses and fingertips *Pattern for fingerless gloves came from this website.*

  • Stage 1 (No photograph because I’m just too eager and excited…) I’m going to paint a nest. Putty/sepia palette with robin’s egg blue. “It’s going to be fabulous!” I say. Stage 2 (No photograph because the painting is looking terrible.) What I envision is not translating well to the canvas. What a mess. Hubby mistakes it for a whirlpool. The kids raise their eyebrows. “I can’t paint!” I complain. Stage 3 (No photograph because I completely paint over significant portions of the painting.) Sigh. The only way to erase in acrylic is to paint over. I reformulate paint mixtures, and pick up different sized brushes. How do birds make such a lovely mess! Ahh. every straw and twig is unique. I start again. “No pain, no gain.” I whimper. Stage 4 (No photograph because I’m just too eager and excited to see something wonderful emerge.) Focusing on the overall feel […]

  • Necessity is truly the mother of invention. As is a lean pocketbook. As one who finds much value and joy in the giving and receiving of gifts, a tight budget forces me to be creative and simple in gifting. While my mind dreams of big and extravagant gifts, my desire for stewardship brings the focus back around to the heart and motive to bless. Time is a rare commodity; it shows itself valuable through effort and availability when money cannot. And while many of us would almost rather find time, than money, growing on trees, God faithfully provides for both. So, do you need some ideas to get you started? Funny you should ask! I’m here to please. {grin} Here are just a few ways to show you care extravagantly on a budget: 1. Hand-write a letter, and send it through the old fashioned postal service. 2. Buy MP3′s of […]

  • I recently had the joy of making handbags for both my mother and my mother-in-law. The best part of creating, is creating for someone special. Picking out fabric, designing for her needs, keeping her personality in mind. These are all the privileges of custom handmade. And, the privilege for me, is the joy of giving it. For my mother-in-law: An elegant little tote for her Bible and study notes. Amy Butler “Love” fabric in periwinkle “Bali Gate.” A crimson trim on the gathered front pocket adds an unexpected pop of color. Everyone who knows mom, knows she never wastes a thing, and therefore, favors using pencils down to little stumps. So, a little matching pencil case was made for her assortment of mini writing utensils. For my mother: My mom is a writer, and never leaves home without journal, pen, ink, Bible, and a myriad of other bibliophilia paraphernalia. Utility […]

  • They descended upon our bedroom to announce the arrival {at last!} of Christmas morning. But in their flurry of excitement, our boys didn’t ask to open presents this Christmas morn; they asked to give them. Between construction paper, glitter, popsicle sticks, and scribbles, we were showered with loving handmade gifts from each of the boys. But, nothing could’ve quite prepared us for the gifts crafted for us by Number 1, who at 7, really understood the joy of gift giving this year. Without prompting, suggestion, or assistance, Number 1 got up early and stayed up late for several days to write and illustrate short stories for his dad and me. Some gifts leave you feeling unworthy of such honor…this was surely that kind of gift. “A Strange Case For Dr. Mike” “The Golden Ship” …sisters–three to be exact–were written into this story about our family… “Aye, aye, Captain Mom!” This […]

  • I’m so happy and thankful to share that my handmade fabric handbags have all but sold out locally at Hip Stitch. (Consequently, you will notice that items are deleted, once sold, from my etsy shop, and not marked as “sold.”) I took three more bags I’ve been working on over to Hip Stitch today. The lovely ladies over there informed me that one  of my handmade purses that sold yesterday, was on it’s way to Missouri for the customer’s daughter, who’s just beginning to sew. That does my heart good. Selling handmade goods is rewarding, but inspiring others is far more satisfying. Hope you are busy creating and gifting…and if you run out of time, these three are at Hip Stitch right now! (*I will not be posting these three bags on etsy for now as things have been selling so well locally. Anything that is still already in the […]

  • No, I’m not pregnant. It’s a baby of a different kind…A local fabric store/sewing lounge called Hip Stitch has asked me to be “Artist of the Month” for the month of December! They will feature and sell my handmade goods at their store all next month. Isn’t that fun? Meanwhile, my poor little neglected etsy shoppe will be open {finally} also by the beginning of December. I guess it took an entire year to “welcome baby number 4 into our lives, ” as it says on my shop announcement! The current season I’m in is demanding as a wife, mother, homeschooler, and minister to other women…and those priorities are not changing. This is a special opportunity for me to use my artistic propensities, so I’m taking it! We’ll see how it goes–but, at least for the month of December you will find lots of goodies for gifting either locally or […]
