You may remember that we ripped out our grass this summer in favor of a potager. I’m excited to show you all how it’s growing out there! About a month ago: The Preacher had felled several Ponderosa Pines at his parents’ home in the mountains. Some of them made it back down to our backyard as stools around the firepit… My favorite potagers always have a sculptural trellis as a focal point… …Number 4 tends to our herbs daily… …and all pitch in willingly to hunt for earthworms… …And recently, the Preacher began building me a pergola entry to the potager… With the dripper and soaker lines in, the garden has exploded. We hope to lay gravel or pavers down in the path. I’m daydreaming about a birdbath, little lanterns, and maybe a small bistro set for a morning cup of tea in the potager… Rainbow chard is my fair-haired child, at […]
I simply can’t buy anything full price…or even half off. But, when caged pendant lights go 75% off at Anthropologie…I’m in! I really do feel thankful when I find a deal. It’s always a little reminder that the Lord is in the small things too. You know I’m always tinkering with the house, and making little changes that make a big difference in the mood and feel of my home. This was one such project. The Preacher drilled three holes into a piece of driftwood I had for decor, and disassembled each pendant and reassembled them after threading the wire through the holes. Brilliant, I know. I’m the ideas, but he’s the know-how for sure! Once reassembled and adjusted to the right length, each cord is knotted on the other side of the driftwood to hold in place. The driftwood is attached to the ceiling via hooks and jute string. […]
I must admit: I’m not a naturally good homemaker. Who really is, anyway? If homemaking is simply shopping for home accoutrements, making pretty pillows (or pinning pretty pillows on Pinterest you intend to make), rearranging furniture, or baking cookies, then yes–I think we all would say we enjoy homemaking. But, if the real work at home involves laundry waiting to be put away, dishes that need handwashing, runaway socks that lurk about, meals that I love to make but hate to clean up after, and the ever elusive phantom dust bunnies that laugh at me from the corners of the house–then, the cultivation of a heart for homemaking is a paradigm shift and not a natural disposition. Working in the home is just that. It’s work. Our culture as seen in television would have us believe that staying at home is either the privilege of frolicking from the gym, to lunch with […]
You all know how much I love terrariums, succulents, airplants, and low-maintenance-high-style plants. Well, one of my sweet sister-in-laws noticed my addiction too, and gave me a special gift for Christmas: a terrarium kit from Enviro-Cakes! I loved it so much, I’m sharing it with you today…and offering you an opportunity to win one for yourself! I think it’s a perfectly clever idea–elegant and simple: a terrarium in a domed cake plate. Why didn’t I think of that? My thoughtful sis-in-law ordered the kit for me without a cake plate since I already owned one. I had no idea what it was when I opened the package, but when I saw the instructions, live plants, and everything I needed to make a terrarium….well, I will not lie–I was giddy with excitement. I know that some of you may not enjoy getting dirt under your fingernails, but I can assure you […]
We began this Advent series by wrapping our thoughts around the waiting, the anticipation, the preparation of the coming of Christ. It’s a condition of the heart more than it is a bustling of activities. It is my hope that you have been encouraged this month–both through the guests here on GraceLaced, as well as those at Annalea’s blog–to embrace the warmth of this season for the significance and the joy it is to celebrate Christ at Christmas. To conclude this series, I’m re-posting the post I wrote originally wrote for Annalea’s blog at the beginning of the series (in case you missed it!) From my home to yours… I can vividly recall years gone by, when my greatest intentions for a Christ-centered Christmas was disappointingly squelched by the hectic and frantic chasing after the “magic” of Christmas. That promise of warmth, cozy, festive, good-will, and joy…if you do, make, […]
While leaves continue to fall, drifting into a blanket of slumber that lies heavy upon the quieted garden outside, a lush little world of growth is transforming my dining table. Three weeks ago, my newly planted amaryllis bulb looked like this: Two weeks ago, the paperwhites looked like this: Today, they are all taking off! Aren’t they so fresh and lovely? Are any of you growing bulbs indoor this Christmas? *****Don’t forget to enter the fabulous Kelly Moore Bag Gift Card Giveaway from yesterday’s post! You have until Friday night, the 2nd!*****
Our family’s been out of town for a few days, taking a little time to just be “us” at our favorite mountain town. We were so honored to be offered a house to stay at (all 7 of us!), free of charge. We don’t know the owner of the house personally, but we were told he had lost his wife, but was now re-married, and thus–the second home. What a blessing to be gifted with time away as a family. You can learn a lot about someone by the books he reads and the photos on his walls. The house tells the story of a man of faith, a man with loving children and sweet grandchildren who are now teenagers. The pictures and decor speak of a life that has known the faithful love of a woman’s touch, and the rich heritage of multi-generations. This is a home that values experiences and […]
Did you take my advice and plant some winter bulbs to bloom for Christmas? It’s still not too late! Let’s check in on mine… My scarlet amaryllis appears to be a twin! The paperwhites are slow to take off, but just give them time… And a little tip: Both bulb plants will grow toward the light, so when your stalks start leaning, turn your pot so they search sunlight and straighten out! Happy Growing!!!
The weather’s turned around here, and with the brisk cold and the grey skies, I’m almost tempted to put on Christmas music. Almost. My mind is thinking ahead, though, to the short 7 weeks left before Christmas. I’m thinking about keeping it simple, about meaningfulness over grandeur. I’m making plans for Advent, for leaving a Christmas impression of steady and significant, rather than whirlwind and worldly upon my kids. I want to teach them to wait, to anticipate, to witness with wonder. Which is exactly what transpires when Christmas bulbs are abloom indoors just in time for the holiday season. If you love the beauty of paperwhites and amaryllis at Christmas time, now is the time to plant those forced bulbs. Don’t delay…they take weeks to bloom! I used bulbs that already had their “winter” and come with roots already sprouting. If you are using un-winterized bulbs, you can trick them […]
