  • Pineapple Shawl for Mom

My lovely mother-in-law taught me how to crochet. She has blessed our home with several handmade quilts and crocheted afghans. To see the immense work that goes into creation each time we use it is a reminder that we are much loved. Each stitch, each crochet. And so it is when you give a gift like that yourself. It is love poured into each and every stitch, each and every crochet. It is thinking about the person you are making it for with every turn of the hand, each quickening of the fingers…until the last stitch is complete, thinking continually of the joy it will be to gift the blessing. This year for Christmas I chose the most challenging pattern a novice like me could handle, and determined to complete it as a labor of love for my mother-in-law. A lovely shawl for a lovely lady. Blue is her favorite color, […]

  • Spring Is In the hAIR

The Preacher is attending a pastor’s conference this week near the residence of a dear college friend of almost 20 years. He’ll be attending with her husband. As this is the closest I will come to vicariously visiting her anytime soon, I’ve sent along some gifts for her little girls. Crocheted flower hairclips made of aqua colored cotton yarn with raspberry colored buttons for centers. Deliciously Spring, don’t you think? Here’s how to make one yourself: Step 1: Crochet a flower, any flower! Try this pattern for a single layer flower: Chain 4, sl st to make ring. *Chain 3 and sc in ring*, repeat from* four times more. Sl st to close round. (You’ll have 5 petals) Work in each chain loop of previous round: sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc. Cut yarn and weave in end. Or this one for a double layer flower: Chain 3, sl st […]

  • Guess what I came across while going through some old containers in my garage? About a foot and a half of the sweetest hand crocheted lace trim. I highly suspect that it was originally made by The Preacher’s nana years ago. I adore crocheted trim, but will not likely find the time to actually make any myself, this side of childrearing! I promptly found a home for this little section of trim, however, right on my mantle. In a houseful of boys, a little touch of femininity is always enjoyable, especially when it’s outside the reach of little hands. Have a lovely Monday friends, and hope you re-discover a little treasure today yourselfl!

  • Would today be a good day to remind you that brisk mornings and cooler nights are just right around the corner? The smell of freshly sharpened pencils will soon become wafts of cider simmering stovetop. Pumpkins, hay bales, golden carpet of leaves…they all await you. A pretty scarf, fingerless gloves, your favorite boots…they’ll be here before you know it. And as this deliciously colored set was a little something I made for someone special, I need to get inspired, and make myself some in anticipation of the days ahead, when we may welcome lightly chilled noses and fingertips *Pattern for fingerless gloves came from this website.*

  • You are familiar with my crush on Crochet Adorned. You’ve seen how inspired I can get, and how slow I can be in finishing a project. I’m happy to say I’ve finished my husband’s hat… But don’t ask me about the pillows. Eek! Summer isn’t over yet, is it? It’s unfortunate that sewing machines don’t travel well in the car or at the pool; otherwise, you know my pillows would be done by now. {smile} I’ve oft praised the portability of crochet, and therein lies the secret to completing my current long-term project. The daydream that accompanies this menagerie of color is the hope that I may one day have a daughter to give a hand-made afghan to. So, here you’ll find me: crocheting hexagons and praying with contentment. God is good. He knows just what we need. And, if it turns out that what I need is not a daughter someday, […]

  • It may be possible that you have bad hair days as I do. Or just plain ol’ roll-outta-bed hair days. We fondly refer to those days at our house as “hat days.” However, sweltering summer heat precludes me from enthusiastically donning a hat other than the ubiquitous summer straw hat. (Think black hair and enclosed space on top of my head.) I love straw hats. I just find them impossible to wear while driving, silly to wear indoors, and altogether itchy if worn all day! I want a hat that breathes, looks cute, and can be worn doing chores or going out. And now I have one. I never win anything, but lo and behold, a few weeks ago I was the randomly chosen winner of a giveaway hosted by fellow etsyian Jenster76. Wouldn’t you know I won a cute beanie that makes for breezy summer hat wearing! Here it […]

  • Cotton hand-crocheted washcloths or dishcloths feel extravagant to me. Sometimes the simplest of things are the most luxurious. I think they fascinate me because I grew up with cello sponges for dishes and terrycloth washcloths for faces. There is nothing wrong there, I just find crocheted washcloths beautiful, functional, and oh so affordable to create. You can wash them in blazing hot water…and they last forever. I dream of having a stack of them, folded prettily–just waiting to mop up a messy face or scrub the breakfast table. The best part is that having a stack of these babies cost you very little more than time. That’s time in the car, time watching a movie…time when you can use your mind on other things while your fingers supply your collection of dishcloths. I made up the most basic of designs; simple but chic (my favorite combo!) …cream with variegated edging […]
