  • Backyard By Candlelight

    There’s hardly a lovelier sight than a softly lit summer evening. Start with collected mason jars… …add sand or pebbles… …tealights or citronella pillar candles… …and sprinkle generously with the sweet sound of unity in praise. The makings of a perfect summer’s night.

  • DIY {Paper and Grapevine Wreath}

    Inspired by something she saw on etsy, my friend Haley convinced me to join her in a little arts and crafts project last weekend. You know I’m such a fan of DIY Anthropologie copycat and wanna-be projects. Oh, and birds…and twigs…and gray…and cream. At least I’m consistent. Supplies: -1 grapevine wreath (around $4) -pages from an old dictionary or book (check thrift shops, around $1) -a few sheets of scrapbooking papers (around .50 a piece) -hot glue gun and glue sticks -package of faux butterflies or birds and nests (check craft stores, around $4) -a sheet or two of craft felt (less than a dollar) For felt roses: Cut a circle around 3 or 4 inches in diameter. Cut a spiral into the circle. The tighter the spiral the tighter the rose. Wind the spiral of felt to look like a rose, gluing edge with hot glue as you go. […]

  • I’ve grown very fond of sorting, organizing, and containing as of late. With 6 of us leaving things behind as we go throughout the day, keeping odds and ends where they belong can be rather tricky. Even more baffling is how to store and organize items used everyday in a way that adds to your decor, rather than detract from it. Admittedly, there is nothing more effective in organization than clear plastic bins of all sizes. Closets and garages would not make it without them! However, I’m always on the lookout for ways to display, or tuck away (!) everyday things that find their place out in the open. Here are some ways we make homes for little things around the house: Vintage milk-glass bowl that sits on my desk… Li’l birdie at the dollar store atop of the china armoire… A carved little box from TJ Maxx… A shiny […]

  • Have you looked at the prices of tree skirts lately? I purchased one years ago for half off after Christmas, but still paid $20. Though this particular skirt is lovely, it just didn’t have the feel I wanted for the tree this year (which is also decked out in after-Christmas clearanced ornaments!) You see, I’ve been enamored with non-color for some time now. Anything cream, pale, grey, black, white, beige…with hints of wood, mercury glass, and natural fibers tucked in between. It’s soothing, and I need soothing. After all the sewing I’ve done lately, I really wanted a fast and easy kind of project. This is when a glue gun comes in handy. And left over felt. Felt is non-fraying, and has the body you need for a tree-skirt. I purchase a few yards of ball-fringe trim, and in five minutes, I had a new tree skirt. My felt is […]

  • Number 4 is currently peering over the metaphorical brink of mobility, ready to catapult into a thorough exploration and dissection of all that is within (and out of) reach. Already I spend most days wishing I could grow a few more arms.  So much for evolution. If it were true, I’d have an extra pair of arms, and eyes on the back of my head.  I digress. Anyhow, my current juggling act of homeschooling, preschooling, toddlerhood, potty-training, organizing, messy feedings, and keeping up with the incredible rolling baby, has effectively drained me of time (and energy) for some of my favorite creative endeavors: painting, sewing, and even blogging. I do, however, make the most of spontaneous creative outbursts that usually accompany must-do’s, like cooking, organizing, and repairing. Such is the case with my recent decorative additions in the kitchen and half-bath. I realized a month or two back, that my […]
