• Clearing Out

Our family’s emerged from the festivities and are now preparing for house guests and the anticipation of a new year. We I eagerly took all the Christmas decorations down and returned everything to it’s place rearranged all the furniture. Does this happen at your house too? It wasn’t without reason, you know. In anticipation of the 7th family member this Spring…and because we always have guests for dinner it seems, we’ve swapped the dining table for the kitchen table. I’ve never enjoyed using our dining room. Too formal; too far from the aromas of the kitchen. I love having everyone at the same table. And now, we all fit. (Plus, there will be 7 kids and four adults in our home for the rest of week!) My workspace has returned to it’s previous position from earlier in the year: right in the middle of it all. And though my kitchen […]

  • Guess what I came across while going through some old containers in my garage? About a foot and a half of the sweetest hand crocheted lace trim. I highly suspect that it was originally made by The Preacher’s nana years ago. I adore crocheted trim, but will not likely find the time to actually make any myself, this side of childrearing! I promptly found a home for this little section of trim, however, right on my mantle. In a houseful of boys, a little touch of femininity is always enjoyable, especially when it’s outside the reach of little hands. Have a lovely Monday friends, and hope you re-discover a little treasure today yourselfl!

  • It’s just my opinion, but I think my house often reflects my inner state. Not interstate. Inner state. {grin} Test my theory: Do you tend to let piles build up all around, distracting yourself with other activities so as to not be overwhelmed by them? Do you see the same pattern in your inner life? Do you clean to the extent to which others can see? Or do you make time for deep cleaning? Draw the parallels… Do you see your home as a place to share with others, or a place to retreat from others? If you don’t see the connections, just pretend I didn’t say anything…and just move on. We’re still friends. {smile} Do these pictures look familiar? Well, they should for some of you who may have been with me when I started turning everything neutral, black/white, and shades of gray in my home a few years […]

  • I’ve often said that my favorite way to redecorate is to shop in my own home. There’s something super satisfying about using what you’ve got, and finding ways to recycle, repurpose, and reinvent…without spending money. You may remember that I made-over the family room before baby No. 4 arrived a little over a year ago. I love this room; it’s where all six of us wrestle hang out. It’s neutral palette just does my heart good when the noise and energy levels around here are so high. Nevertheless, as families grow and needs change, rooms get shuffled as well. My computer had been residing on the kitchen counter, but with all my Chinese culinary endeavors, ardent breadmaking, and dangerous mishaps, (not to mention my need for better working space)…I knew it needed a safer, more functional home. It seems that whenever we move things around in our house, our trusty […]

  • I recently redecorated a bit in my dining room. The shuffle was prompted by a pressing desire to lighten things up (resulting in the relocation of the black and white drapes), and the addition of an old (new to us!) china armoire we found off craigslist. It was my birthday present! After last year’s crazy house-calming campaign before the baby came, several rooms of my house adopted a cool, muted neutral palette. The only problem with cool colors like gray, black, and white, is just that–it can feel cold and uninviting. So my goal was to create a more family-friendly dining room that felt charming rather than formal. When every square foot of your house must serve multiple functions: the dining room is also hubby’s study, the schoolroom is the playroom, the master bedroom is the sweatshop sewing corner and the hubby’s library, there’s not the luxury of having just […]

  • You may recall my bedroom redo last year around this time. There is nothing I enjoy more in home decorating, than to go shopping in my own house. So, with the recent freshening up downstairs (future posts to come), the damask drapes took a trip upstairs for a chance to try out the master bedroom… Be honest, is this too much? Go ahead, I can handle the truth…even if we don’t agree. *grin* And yes, you did catch a preview of another wee quilt to come!

  • The family room: where the family camps out, hosts Bible Studies, cuddles and reads throughout the day, watches an occasional movie, listens to Celtic reels, relives old memories through albums, and sits by the fire while the man of the house picks his guitar. It is both our family haven and our sphere of hospitality; it serves as both a romantic corner for tea and cookies after-hours, as well as open space for the kids to get their energy out before bed. The walls of this room bear witness to many an argument followed by the laying down of arms. If they could speak, they would share insightful stories of the losses and joys overheard from the lives of those who’ve found safety to share within this home. And with the arrival of each new life, this room becomes the still and silent setting for many a sleepless night, early […]

  • Time for the big reveal! I know many of you have been eagerly anticipating pictures of my completed bedroom makeover project…and I have been so eager to share them! Many elements of the room are not yet completed, but I couldn’t wait until everything was perfect. The preacher hasn’t gotten his study/desk area of the room quite cleaned up yet, either, so…you’ll have to wait on that as well, as you can’t put demands on intellectual and spiritual genius! *grin*  I decoupaged an old box with various black and white papers for his nightstand–so as to gracefully hide all the things a man really needs to have a purse for!  The preacher also has a vintage-inspired African travel poster above his desk, a reminder of his great love for flying and Africa.  I love that it complements the room so well..in a masculine way. The new quilt is amazing. My […]
