Do you ever feel like you say the same things to your children over and over again? Don’t you sometimes wish that the training and disciplining of our kids could be a completable task, preferably with a little box to check next to it? I’m over at The Better Mom today, talking about the repetition that is the task of parenting: “Sometimes we act as though our kids can be trained with one deft stroke if we could manage to be accurate enough, stern enough, loud enough, or wise enough as parents. We are dismayed and sometimes shocked when our kids don’t change their attitudes for good, stop the habit in a day, or cease to be repeat offenders. Swift and precise parenting would save us time and energy, not to mention how good we’d feel about ourselves as mothers! But that is not how parenting is. In fact, it […]
…now sits one gallon of kombucha brewing and a jar of my salsa in the process of lacto-fermenting. It’s a bacteria wonderland over here on the kitchen counter! I’m new to both, but can confidently say that homemade kombucha is just as good, if not better, than store bought; and my first batch of lacto-fermented salsa was more flavorful than any unfermented salsa I’ve ever made. Not to mention all the flora. So, there you have it. A crunchy con mama in the making. What next? Sprouted wheat and sprouted spelt quinoa muffins? Yup. Been there done that. I cook from scratch most days, and with mostly all fresh, unprocessed ingredients; but with budgetary constraints, it’s been baby steps around here with all the other aspects of whole foods. How organic, pastured, unprocessed, sprouted, soaked, raw, free-range, grass-fed, unrefined, fermented, fresh ground, homegrown ARE YOU? do tell!
Welcome to GraceLaced Mondays! Grace is found in the everyday when you are intentional about taking note of it. It is found in the sink full of dishes awaiting you after a family meal, it shines in the faces of your imperfect children, it soothes from the pages of God’s Word, and it is tucked into the enjoyment of a fresh batch of cookies. Grace is in a beautiful moment and a heartbreaking one alike. Grace is blessing beyond what you and I deserve. ********************************* How often we forget that we are safe, though we may be fearful, in the midst of life’s storms? Annalea Hart of Hope and Honey gave us a beautiful reminder last week of God’s grace found through and after a tumultuous storm: “life’s storms are not so pleasant. i am stuck in the downpour. it is uncomfortable and exhausting. there is pain and sadness and […]
I’ve been feeling quiet lately. Nothing amazing to share, no extraordinary story to tell. The thoughts that accompany the joys and pains of daily life are often left un-excavated and unsifted, left on the nightstand for later. But later has been filled with many other things. Things like bandages, conflict resolution over Lincoln Logs, sowing seeds with little fingers, listening to World War II facts, demonstrating the fine art of cleaning a toilet to future husbands, telling childhood stories to young ears, feeding the souls of child-like faith, heralding all that is truly praise-worthy, and spending more time thinking on how to be progressing and not digressing in this season of my life. This is the stuff of motherhood. To be ever-present in the mundane and trite, to be deliberate in the noteworthy and catalyst moments, and to be pressing fervently into greater Christ-likeness in the midst of unrelenting weariness. […]
These peonies are from a new friend I met through this blog. I received these in person… Blogging and social networking is a peculiar part of the current ethos. Whereas relationship was once about sitting down over lunch with another person, friendship is now accessible through the written word, through blogging, through “likes” and comments. It could be argued that relationships formed online can be like pen pals of “old”…but with the airmail bird tweeting and instant messaging back and forth throughout a day. Some might consider these relationships disingenuous, lacking the substance of relationships in one’s immediate circle and community. Still some, while in a season of being closely tied to home with young children, may find great community and encouragement with likeminded folks found through blogs and forums. Regardless of where you land on the spectrum, each one of us is connected at some level to relationships via […]
As much as I love me a whirl in the kitchen with fancy-schmancy culinary terms like “deglaze,” “au gratin,” and “carmelize,” there’s really nothing quite as satisfying as a good slow-cooker dinner made in the first 5 minutes of your day. You might be discouraged to read further if I told you I came up with this recipe after making a big batch, sans spices, for Mancub Number 5. Yup, reinvented baby food. He loved it, The Preacher loved it…we all loved it enough to eat it for dinner a few weeks ago. So, I played with the flavors a bit, and came up with what our family considers a winner. Let me know what you think if you try it! (My recipe is for a super large batch that feeds my family and dinner guests. You could easily cut this recipe in half to make it more manageable!) 2 […]

We all have know times of unanswered prayer, delayed understanding in God’s ways. I was blessed by Beth’s perspective: “It makes me think about the way that Jesus delayed going to Lazarus when he lay sick and dying. He didn’t hurry to Lazarus’ side because it wasn’t best. In John 11:4, Jesus said that the […]
If you love Sandra McCracken and folky music, you’ll be interested in Rain For Roots: Big Stories For Little Ones, an album for children (and their parents), written by Sally Lloyd-Jones, author of The Jesus Storybook Bible. It is a collection of 10 folk songs for children about classic Bible stories. The full album is available for download on May 15. Until then, you can download four free preview songs: Do you struggle with guilt in motherhood? Let the truth be balm to the soul for mothers who fail, from The Resurgence. Our school reached a milestone this week, and received full accreditation from CSI and NCA-CASI! We are thankful to have been given such high commendations for being a 4 yr. young school; and yet, we know that it’s not standards, but vision that drives us. This post on how classical education shapes us as God intended, from The […]
