Spring Is In the hAIR

The Preacher is attending a pastor's conference this week near the residence of a dear college friend of almost 20 years. He'll be attending with her husband. As this is the closest I will come to vicariously visiting her anytime soon, I've sent along some gifts for her little girls. Crocheted flower hairclips made of aqua colored cotton yarn with raspberry colored buttons for centers.

Deliciously Spring, don't you think? Here's how to make one yourself:

Step 1: Crochet a flower, any flower!

Try this pattern for a single layer flower:

Chain 4, sl st to make ring.

*Chain 3 and sc in ring*, repeat from* four times more. Sl st to close round. (You'll have 5 petals)

Work in each chain loop of previous round: sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc. Cut yarn and weave in end.

Or this one for a double layer flower:

Chain 3, sl st to make ring. 10 sc in ring, sl st in first sc to join (10 sc.)

Ch 1, sc in first sc, *ch 3 sk next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * 3 times more, sk next sc, sl st in first sc of round to join.

Sl st in first ch-3 lp, *(sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc) in ch-3 lp, sl st in next ch-3 lp; repeat from * around, sl st in first sl st to join.

Working behind petals in previous round, ch1, sc around the post of first sc in Round 2, ch 5, sk next petal, *sc around the post of next sc from Round 2, ch 5, sk next petal; repeat from * around, sl st to first sc of round to join.

Work (sl st, sc, hdc, 4 dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-5 lp around, sl st in first sl st to join. Fasten off.

Step 2: Add a little decoration.

Step 4: Attach!

And, as I have made a different one for each of her four little girls, Mom gets to match her little ones with a grown up version. You can find the pattern for this necklace here.

Handmade gifts are the best, wouldn't you agree? If nothing else, it says, "I was thinking of you with every crochet, with every stitch."
